Titusville
I went to Titusville, Florida in February 2003 a week before I had to start
on my FAA PPL course. The first 10 days I stayed in HAI's trailer at our
airport. After 10 days I moved into an apartment on Sisson Road in Titusville.
My first flatmate was Daniel from Austria who started the course a month after I
did. After he finished his training he got hired in Orlando and of course moved
to Orlando.
My second flatmate was Sebastian from France - one of the other instructors
from HAI. He moved in when Daniel moved out and stayed until his visa ran out - 7
month after he moved in. After almost 21 month in Titusville I moved out myself
and down to Cocoa Beach
where I shared a really nice apartment right on the beach with David -
another instructor from HAI. Cocoa Beach is so much different from Titusville
that you can't compare the two places!
Florida
I lived in FL for 25 month during my training and then later when I worked at
HAI. I got to like FL and US a lot
A lot of
people don't like the summer in FL because of the heat and the high humidity
(often +30C and humidity close to 100%) but since I like it when it's warm it
did not bather me to much. The rest of the year the weather is excellent - both
for flying and just in general! I will for sure miss the nice temperatures in
the winter and the BBQ's the whole year around. The only bad thing about the
weather is the chances for hurricanes!
My first summer
in FL we didn't have a single hurricane at all. Unfortunately we then had three
in 2004 The
summer TS you can used to. They are quite impressing in size compared to a
Danish TS!!
One thing I am missing from US is that you can go shopping when ever you want
to. I don't now how many times I have been on my way to go shopping just to find
out that I am to late...
The nature in FL is quite amazing. I don't like the alligators to much up
close - but have touched one anyway! David and I went out for a road trip and
ended up at Silver Springs north west of Orlando. There was a 5 ft gator
sleeping in the grass just beside the water and we both sneaked up close to its
tail and touch it. It was actually quite soft on the tail. We decided to leave
alone when it started to open up it's mouth...
They have quite a bit of springs in FL. I have seen Silver Springs -
the place where a lot of Tarzan movies have been recorded. I can't remember
exactly how many springs there were but I think it was just above 120. The have
three or four different glass-bottom boat trips you can try. Funny in the
beginning - but after a while you don't really see anything new. Another spring
not to far away from Titusville is Blue Spring. I went up to Blue Spring
with my sister and her family when they visited me in February 2005. We were
lucky and saw quite a bit of manatees that day. The second time I went up to
Blue Spring was with David. We didn't see any manatees at all and took instead a
swim in the spring. The water temperature stays the same the whole year around
so even though it was in March the water wasn't too cold. The water is so clear
that you can see all the fish swim right below you.
Sea turtle nesting In the summertime when the sea turtles come up on
the beach to nest you might be able to see it. I've seen it twice - it is quite
impressive. Both times we were a group from the school that meet in the evening
at Perkins and then walked along the beach. The first time it was only David and
me that saw a turtle - the other turned around started to walk the other way.
When we saw the turtle it was digging the hole. The small eggs are looking just
like ping pong balls. I don't know how many eggs it laid but I guess it was
around 70 and the hole was full when it was done. Then it started do cover the
eggs with sand which took more took quite a while. Finally the turtle was done
and started to walked back to the water. From we saw the turtle and till she was
back in the water was more than 45 minutes. If you are in FL in July then talked
to Lee and see if he maybe could give you some hints to were to go so you can
see it yourself - it is really interesting!
Key West is the most southern of the continues US. I think it's just
like one big party down there the whole year around! I been there three times in
total. First time I was driving down with a friend from DK to see the Keys. We
only had one day there and didn't really get to see anything. Second time I was
flying down from Titusville. We went out on a boat trip for six hours where we
could try waterskiing, jet skiing, snorkeling etc. It was really good fun. Last
time I was driving the schools truck down when we 5 of our helicopters were
flying down. If you have a chance to visit Key West then I would definitely
recommend you to go for it - even though it's a long drive on US1 were traffic
sometime gets a bit slow...
Sea World is just one of many tourist attractions in the Orlando area.
I've been there four times and would still like to go there again. It's amazing
what the can get the animals to do. Most impressive is the Shamu show with the
killer whales. I don't know how many times I've seen the show now but I still
enjoy it. There are also a show with al kinds of small animals running around
between each other which is definitely worth to see. If you are into roller
coasters then check out Kraken! If you are going to visit Sea World then make
sure that you arrive in the morning when the park is opening because you will
mostly use the whole day and still not see everything.
Kennedy Space Center is another of the big tourist attractions. I
found it really interesting to see and read about the explorer of space. If you
are going to visit KSC then make sure that you go on the bus trip before it
stops. I have seen a lot of rocket launches in my time in FL. Unfortunately I
got not to see a shuttle launch. A month before I arrived to FL Discovery blow
up during it's entry back to earth and since there have been no shuttle
launches. I hope I can see a launch when I return back to FL to do my JAA skill
test later this year.
Disney World is known to everybody so of course I had to check it out
as I was in FL for 2 years. It consists of different parks. The two parks I
visited was Animal Kingdom and Epcot. Animal Kingdom is more or less just like
another zoo - but with Disney figures around. Epcot has small examples of
different countries from all over the world. It was okay, but not really
anything special either. I must say though that I got quite disappointed! I
don't find Disney World anything special and would not visit it again!
