So, is it cheaper to learn to fly in
US compared to Denmark?
Well, as you can read I spend approximately $ 50,000.00 for my
flight training in Florida. This does not include any living expenses - but I
would have to pay for that in Denmark as well, so I have chosen to keep it out
of my budget so far (The living expenses for Florida is approximately the same
compared to Denmark!). So, I will say it is cheaper to learn to fly in US!
Not everybody will agree with me though... There are some extra
expenses like flight tickets etc. you will have to add to my expenses. Normally
I paid $700-750 for a roundtrip. I have been able to get a ticket for $ 580 and
I guess it is possible that it can be even cheaper.
Another thing is that I could not receive SU from Denmark
because my certificates are FAA certificates and I can't come back to Denmark
and fly right away. If you choose to take JAR certificates at HAI you can get
the normal SU rate from Denmark. So why did I not do JAR certificates...
Well, if you take JAR certificates you will use the first 11-12
month on your visa. Then you will have to take a FAA CPL and CFI before you can
start to work in US and you have easily used another 2-4 months. Then your time
left on your visa is not that much any more and most companies prefer to hire
instructors with a CFII and not to short time left on their visa! So unless you
go through you training in minimum time and get a job right away you might not be
able to get that many hours.
I did my PPL, IR, CPL, Mountain Course and CFI in 9
months - which also included a two weeks vacation in Denmark! I went home to
Denmark for three weeks after my CFI and did not do my CFII right away when
I came back. So when I was done with my CFII and got hired I had used 11 month
of my visa. It is possible to do it faster - but you will have to push yourself
and also your instructor!! I was lucky that my instructor was fairly new and was
willing to work almost every day - including weekends - Thank you Jaira. I managed to keep an
average of 18 hrs a month (dual and solo) when I was a student. Corey, my first
student did all his training (PPL, R22 transition, IR, CPL, CFI and CFII) in 10
1/2 month. I guess the average student use slightly more than 12 month to finish
up. I have seen students that use a lot more time than 12 month for their
training. My opinion is that it is mostly because the do not put enough effort
in to it!
After I started to work as an instructor I managed to keep and average of 75 flight hours/month.
That was often working at least 6 days a week from 0700 to 2100! Even in the
summer time where there are thunderstorms almost every day in FL I managed to
fly quite a bit. You just have to plan the flights after the weather. I often
flew from 0600 in the morning or started later and flew until 2300 in the
evening.
Some months were for sure better than others - in September 2004 I
flew less than 40 hours due to hurricanes and the following evacuations... In
November 2004 I flew more 100 hours.
Another thing to take into consideration when you are about to
choose where to take your license is that you are getting paid to work as an
instructor. Not a lot - but for me it was more than I used and I were able to
save up some money for my JAR ATPL ground school.
JAR theory and JAR SE IR - England
I am paid £4,100.00 for the JAR ATPL ground
school at Cabair and £715.00 to the CAA (written exams
fees). The
living expenses seems to be slightly more than I would use in Denmark. But compared
to a modular course in Denmark the course at Cabair is shorter - so living
expenses would probably be the same as I would have to pay in
Denmark.
Accommodation in Norwich while I did my JAR IR was quite
expensive! The course was estimated to take 5 weeks. I hoped to be able to do it
faster, but due to poor weather and lots of students it took me 5 weeks to
complete. I believe its possible to finish the course faster, but it all depends
on how many students there are. I paid £25/night at a
nice B&B with in cycling distance from Norwich Airport.
