Why aviation?

I worked 1½ years as a nanny/au pair with a family in Denmark where both parents were pilots. We often talked about aviation and flying all which sounded quite interesting. One day I was lucky to get on a flight with Susanne in a AS332 - Super Puma Helicopter out to the North Sea. It was amazing how she could pick up the helicopter in a hover and hold it still above the ground, before we started to accelerate for take off. After that flight I knew that I wanted to fly again - but I wanted to be on the controls myself!

While I waited to start on my own education to become a helicopter pilot, I often helped with all the practical things on the ground for BelAir. Some times the pilot let my fly the helicopter enroute, when we needed to fly to a different base to do the flying from. It was hard in the beginning to maintain a certain height/speed but it got better and better.

The first step to become a helicopter pilot was taking 25th June 2002. I went to Flyvemedicinsk Klinik at Rigshospitalet (Danish hospital) to get my medical. You can read more about the medical examination itself under Medical to the left of this page. I arrived at the hospital at 0800 and was done at 1400. After 3 weeks I received my JAA Class 1 Medical with the mail. As soon as I got my medical I knew that I now could be a pilot, and it was only a matter of time to save up some money before I would start the training.

In order to start flight training in Denmark you have to pass an Entrance Examination with the school. I decided to do my training at Billund AirCenter and went to do their Examination in December 2002. You can read more about the test under Billund AirCenter. Shortly before Christmas they emailed me and told me that I had passed their entrance test and could expect to start on their first class for helicopter pilots - in February 2003. One of the best mails I ever received.

Well, I did not do my flight training at BAC anyway but went to Florida to do my training with HAI. The reason was that 2 offshore pilots made it pretty clear for me, that I would have a hard time to find work in Denmark if I took my education with BAC and would finish with only 135 hrs! Thank you Bent and Jørgen for the good advise
